Next up in our "Meet the Team" series, it's Steven from Askham Bryan College!

Hey there! Please tell us your name, where you are based, and your job title.

Hi! I'm Steven McLean and l am based at Askham Bryan College as a NCOP Outreach Assistant.

Tell us about your background...

I first went to Liverpool John Moore University and got a BA (Hons) Film, Broadcasting & Communication. I later went on to complete my PGSE (QTS) in Secondary Mathematics at York St Johns University. In the education sector l have worked at Manor CE Academy, York High School, Danesgate Community and now Askham Bryan College. I have also worked in property, conferencing and hospitality, management, retail, sales and marketing and worked as a chef.

What does an average day look like in your role?

An average day in my role can be very varied. They often involve showing students and community groups round our fantastic facilities at Askham Bryan College. Hanging out with the Wallabies and Marmazets in the Wildlife Park, watching show jumping and dressage in our equine centre, to checking out all the projects that the floristry are creating for shows across the country. I can be showing students round our farm to our outdoor adventure sports facilities. Other days l will be working alongside students in signposting various career and education progression opportunities. When l am not on site, l am normally running residentials and campus visits to other universities and campus sites, to enjoying and showcasing the best in the land based industry at The Great Yorkshire Show and The Harrogate Flower Show but to name a few.

What has been one of your favourite moments on the project so far?

Favourite moments of the project have always been the recognition of helping students to progress and figure out what they want to do next. To have students say that they would never of had this opportunity if NCOP had not run.

Why do you think going to college and/or university is important?

'Education is the passport for the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it'- Malcolm X

What is your top tip for someone applying to university?

Enjoy it!

Finally... what is your favourite inspirational quote?

'God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him' -John Piper
