Hello! What is your name, where are you based and what is your job title?

Hi I’m Laura, I’m based at York St John as part of the Central Team and I am a Data Assistant.

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

In my spare time I love all things netball. I play in the York and District League as well as a couple of social leagues in York. I love being outdoors and like to go out walking (especially when the weather is nice). The best trips are the ones where I’ve taken the most photos, often competing with my partner for who has taken the best shot.

Tell us about your background…

Originally, I am from Sunderland. I moved to York for university and never left. For my undergraduate degree I studied Sport Science at York St John University. I then stayed at York St John to do a MSc by Research and I am currently doing PhD. Whilst studying, I have worked in retail, I have done some research assistant work and taught as a visiting lecturer.

What are you looking forward to most about working on the Uni Connect project?

I’m just really excited meet the team and get involved with all the projects. And even though I’ve been to university, the learning doesn’t stop there. I’m still learning new things and developing my skills and I think I can really grow in this job role.

Why do you think going to college and/or university is important?

Qualifications is the obvious answer but it is definitely more than that. Moving away to university (although not too far so I could pop home for the weekend when I wanted to) gave me the independence to really start adult life. And it’s okay if you get things wrong because it’s your housemates first time away too, so you’re all in the same boat. It also gave me the confidence to try new things even if it might be a bit scary.

What is your top tip for someone thinking about going to university?

To look at other things the university has to offer. Yes, the courses they offer are important, but check out the sports teams and societies that you might be interested in joining. If you’re thinking of moving away from home, explore the area off campus too. Look at university as a whole package not just the course material.
