Next up in our "Meet the Team" series, it's Dan from York St John University!

Hey there! Please tell us your name, where you are based, and your job title.

Dan. York St John University. Outreach Assistant.

Tell us about your background...

I graduated from York St John University in 2018. I studied sport science and injury rehabilitation, as I've always had an interest in sport. This role is my first full time job after university and I'm really enjoying it. In the past I have had a few part time jobs before and whilst at university in pubs and restaurants, pulling pints and waiting on.

What does an average day look like in your role?

I'm not sure I have an average day in this role, each day is different. I could be hosting an on-site visit here at York St John University or out in local schools in the North Yorkshire region delivering talks and activities about higher education and everything that comes with university.

What has been one of your favourite moments on the project so far?

My favorite moment so far has to be assisting in taking students from Askham Bryan College to a outdoor activity center for a day of farming activities including pig and sheep herding, tractor driving and a BBQ. Even in questionable weather conditions it was a great day out.

Why do you think going to college and/or university is important?

Where to start! You will gain new life skills and getting a degree will open some many doors for you. From my own experience university gave me the opportunity to grow as an individual and become more confident, before university I was very quite and struggled talking to large groups, but now its part of my job and is something I do nearly every week. Also you will meet so many great people and make friends for life. And finally it's just a lot of fun!!

What is your top tip for someone applying to university?

Don't rush into it. Take your time to have a look around the universities you are interested in, go to as many open days as possible and get a feel for the place. It's going to be your new home for the next three or more years so make sure you feel comfortable there.

Finally... what is your favourite inspirational quote?

'A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.' - Charles Darwin
