Here is the next installment in our "A Week In The Life Of" series!
Hello! What is your name and where are you from?
Hello, my name is Graham and I'm from Scarborough.
Where do you work and what is your job?
I am a Police Officer for North Yorkshire Police.
Please can you tell us a little more about where you work and the industry it is in?
My current role is Rural Beat Manager and Wildlife Crime Officer.
What is a typical day like in your job?
My days vary with none being the same, but typically involve investigating crime, attending road traffic accidents, and keeping the local community safe.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the variety of the work I do and particularly the satisfaction of helping others.
Did you go to college or university? If so, what did you study and where?
I went to Scarborough Sixth Form College and studied Biology, Art, Sociology, and Physics. I didn't go to university.
Why did you choose to study this subject/s?
I chose these subjects as I found these interesting at school and wanted to further my knowledge in these topics.
Did you complete any other post-16 qualifications?
A-Levels and then Accounts and Book-keeping. During my police career, I have gained several other qualifications relevant to my role.
How has the COVID-19 lockdown affected your job?
Due to the pandemic, my role responsibilities have increased to include the new legislation relating to the national restrictions introduced by the government, this is in addition to my everyday workload. This has proved difficult and quite demanding as despite the majority of the population following the guidelines there has been a large number of people who have blatantly ignored the law and have put the community at risk. Being one of the services classed as a key public role my working hours have remained the same and on some occasions increased.
Please can you tell us about your "Career Journey"?
When I left school I didn't really know what career I wanted so opted to study a broad range of subjects that would give me more options at sixth form. On leaving college I opted for a career in accountancy however after several years in that profession I decided on a career change, applying for the Police Service where I have now worked for 24 years!
What would be your one piece of advice for someone who is looking into the job sector you work in?
Work hard and study a broad range of subjects to the best of your ability, you might want to consider volunteering or community work but most of all make sure you stay out of trouble so you don't gain a criminal record!
